Spearfishing Dogtooth Tuna with MJK
MOHAMMED JASSIM AL-KUWARI
One man who is fast becoming a legend in blue water hunting is Mohammed Jassim Al Kuwari.
He has now become known as MJK, for his incredible stone shots on insane fish.
These epic stone shots were made famous in Mohammed’s legendary film Going East and have quickly become known as ‘MJK’s , the name seems to have stuck.
At certain times of the year his local waters teem with huge shoals of fish all shapes and sizes. With these shoals come good numbers of big pelagics, the perfect environment for Mohammed to hone his skill as an expert marksman.
Between seasons and when preparing for trips Mohammed can be found experimenting and pushing his gear and skill levels to the max. It is this dedication and attention to detail that is driven by an unquenchable desire that makes Mohammed a man worthy of standing with the Legends of spearfishing.
Back at his home in Qatar Mohammed has been instrumental in the development of spearfishing in the gulf, through sharing the sport with other Spearo’s and showing them his hunting techniques, his spearfishing films with the latest being One Fish Going East and his spearfishing shop Qatarsub which connects him even more so to the local spearfishing community.
He often travels abroad to seminars and conventions with the mission of learning everything he can from well known spearfisherman. He has played an instrumental role in inspiring and encouraging spearfishing in Qatar.
The goal for him however is not just to shoot amazing fish, Mohammed has an incredible desire to document in the best way possible each and every adventure, its his way of sharing in what is essentially a very personal journey of exploration and adventure for him.
Over the years Mohammed has stayed on the cutting edge of spearfishing cinematography. Pioneering and perfecting this art that has made him and his films famous world wide.
But there is more behind the man with the magic shots than meets the eye. MJK has an unbelievable passion for spearfishing adventure and is constantly on the look out for new and wild places to dive. Often taking chances on going to unexplored and exotic places that have never been dived before.

Australia has long been considered one of the primary pioneering blue water hunting destinations. The Paxman family is one of those early pioneering families whose legacy continues today through the living legend of Barry Paxman. The internet streams images of Barry with massive fish in his iconic indo-mask and grey beard. Barry started spearfishing at an early age, right at the dawn of modern day spearfishing. His father Frank Paxman was one of the early pioneers in Western Australia. Even his mother Jackie was a fine spearfisherman getting her fair share of good fish. So Barry grew up in a spearfishing family and from an early age learn t the art of getting big fish. It wasn’t long before Barry and some friends started looking for some big blue water species. Barry became a master at getting blue water trophy fish and in 2001 Barry broke the world record for Spanish Mackerel, becoming the envy of spearfishermen worldwide. Barry’s kids all dive and over the years have become formidable spearfishermen. They’ve grown up to be true Paxmans, shooting massive fish that most divers only dream of. To this day Barry still gets amazing fish, often leaving younger spearfishermen scratching their heads, but Barry’s always keen to show the guys the ropes and mentor some of the younger crew. One of these guys is actually Welsh who’s been following Barry around with a camera, documenting some of the insane spearfishing off the Western coast of Australia.

Spearfishing would be very different today if it were not for one man. This next legend is Rob Allen the man who pretty much revolutionized the speargun. Rob never started out in the spearfishing industry. He worked in conservation as a Game Ranger. He was posted on a secluded stretch of beach on the Zululand coast and in his off time he went spearfishing. The Zululand coast is infamous for its clean water and big game fish. Rob soon realized that he would need to modify his equipment if he was going to land these powerful pelagic. The stories of Rob started to emerge about the gear that he was developing and taking massive fish with. Soon other spearfishermen started to discover the huge challenge of hunting in the blue. Rob’s guns were in demand and from these humble beginnings; the legend of Rob Allen began. Today Rob Allen’s gear is known all around the world. This is his story and a glimpse into the life of the man behind the speargun.

Blue water hunting would not be the same if it were not for one man. This legend and father of blue water hunting is none other than Dr Terry Maas.
In the 80’s Terry was a multiple US National champ and for a decade was part of the USA spearfishing team.
By the 90’s Terry had turned his attention to the art of blue water hunting. He pushed the envelope on what fish could be taken with a speargun. And it was not long before Terry was breaking massive world records.
By the late 90’s Terry’s accomplishments were legendary, and in a time before the internet his books and videos became the blue water spearfishermans bibles.
His books laid out from A-Z what Terry had learnt, laying the foundation for hunting massive trophy fish. His films inspired and opened up the awesome world of freedive spearfishing to thousands of people.
Today Terry has hosted TV programs, and lead the way in freedive videography with his footage used in productions world wide. He still continues to innovate with inventions like the freedive recovery vest.
Terry still dives and shoots incredible fish he is a pioneer and a legend who paved the way for a whole new breed of spearfisherman. Its because of him spearfishing is what it is today.
